Differences Between Pneumatic and Mechanical Plugs

Here’s what you need to know about the differences between these two types of plugs used for pipe-related testing and similar projects.
Pneumatic Pipe Plugs
Typically used for pressure testing, pneumatic plugs are inflatable rubber plugs. They temporarily stop a pipe’s flow by creating a tight seal. There is a need to monitor the inflation pressure with an air pressure gauge to make sure the seal remains tight, especially if the plug will be left in place for an extended period of time.
Mechanical Plugs
Mechanical pipeline plugs are different from pneumatic or inflatable plugs in that they are solid. This means they will not lose inflation pressure when used. Instead, they are secured or mechanically actuated with rim nuts that are tightened around the edge of the plug. The result is a tight rubber seal that allows the target pipe to be tested while flow is blocked.
Choosing the Right Plugs
It ultimately depends on the nature of your project or your needs when it comes to determining what’s appropriate or preferred. Mechanical pipes, for instance, tend to work well for pipe, stack, and vent testing. Plus, there’s no need to monitor air pressure. Pneumatic plugs, on the other hand, have higher test pressure capabilities.
